Summary

Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett investigates a mysterious death at a secret remote high-tech facility in this riveting new novel from #1 New York Times bestseller C。J。 Box。

When a prominent University of Wyoming professor goes missing, authorities are stumped。 That is, until Joe Pickett makes two surprising discoveries while hunting down a wounded elk on his district as an epic spring storm descends upon him。 First, he finds the professor's vehicle parked on a remote mountainside。 Then Joe finds the professor's frozen and mutilated body。 When he attempts to learn more, his investigation is obstructed by federal agents, extremists, and Governor Colter Allen。

Nate Romanowski is rebuilding his falconry company--and financing this through crypto mining with the assistance of Geronimo Jones。 He's then approached by a shadowy group of local militant activists that is gaining in power and influence, and demanding that Wyoming join other western states and secede from the union--by force, if necessary。 They ask Nate to throw in with them, but he's wary。 Should he trust them, or is he being set up?

As a storm of peril gathers around them, Joe and Nate confront it in different ways--and maybe, for the first time, on opposite sides。

My first in this series and probably my last。 Jumping in with book 23 wasn't a problem; it worked just fine as a stand alone。 The problem was the tone and worldview。 I had a hard time connecting with the main character, Joe Pickett。 He was basically a good guy and was reasonably flawed。 I just had a hard time connecting with him。 The mystery was well done and interesting if a little too reliant on conspiracy theories。 In the real world, I have little patience for conspiracy theories while in boo My first in this series and probably my last。 Jumping in with book 23 wasn't a problem; it worked just fine as a stand alone。 The problem was the tone and worldview。 I had a hard time connecting with the main character, Joe Pickett。 He was basically a good guy and was reasonably flawed。 I just had a hard time connecting with him。 The mystery was well done and interesting if a little too reliant on conspiracy theories。 In the real world, I have little patience for conspiracy theories while in books, I love them or hate them depending on how the author handles them。 In this case, it was too twisty and convoluted yet aspects were frighteningly believable。I'm glad I tried the author as several bloggers whose opinions i trust and respect have recommended the books。 But in this case, not a good match。 。。。more

Game warden Joe Pickett has once again stumbled into a larger plot and problem when he goes after a wounded elk and finds a dead man, a Chinese citizen who is a professor at the university。 And then the corpse disappears。 At the same time, his pal Nate, an ex-special ops guy and ace falconer, is approached by a man who wants him to join a movement opposing various government regulations。 As always this is topical (albeit a bit far fetched for part of it) and layered, with two apparently separate Game warden Joe Pickett has once again stumbled into a larger plot and problem when he goes after a wounded elk and finds a dead man, a Chinese citizen who is a professor at the university。 And then the corpse disappears。 At the same time, his pal Nate, an ex-special ops guy and ace falconer, is approached by a man who wants him to join a movement opposing various government regulations。 As always this is topical (albeit a bit far fetched for part of it) and layered, with two apparently separate plot lines that canny readers know might fit together at some point (or will they?)。 I've been fan of this long running series for Joe, his family, and the atmospherics of the life of a game warden (this time there's a blizzard) and as always, this rewards。 Those who have been following Joe will be pleased to see Geronimo turn up again and perhaps disappointed that the Pickett daughters play only minor roles。 But never fear- Joe keeps up his tradition of destroying government vehicles! Thank to edelweiss for the ARC。 This was a page turner for me and as always I'm eagerly awaiting the next one。 。。。more

It’s early spring in Twelve Sleep County, Wyoming where the weather can be quite unpredictable。 As a snowstorm blows in, Game Warden Joe Pickett stumbles upon apparent poachers。 He investigates as usual and finds a dead body - which “disappears” when he calls on the sheriff to investigate。 But, of course, Joe is not satisfied with the ensuing investigation and stays involved in seeking answers to what is going on。 Enter falconer Nate Romanowski, Joe’s good friend, ex-military and dangerous to a It’s early spring in Twelve Sleep County, Wyoming where the weather can be quite unpredictable。 As a snowstorm blows in, Game Warden Joe Pickett stumbles upon apparent poachers。 He investigates as usual and finds a dead body - which “disappears” when he calls on the sheriff to investigate。 But, of course, Joe is not satisfied with the ensuing investigation and stays involved in seeking answers to what is going on。 Enter falconer Nate Romanowski, Joe’s good friend, ex-military and dangerous to a fault。 Nate is approached to join an insurrectionist group - which will uncover several different issues - cybercurrency mining, radical right wing groups, conspiracies, and dishonest politicians。 All of which lend themselves to another good read in this series (this in #23)。 There is plenty of action, the descriptions of Wyoming (especially its weather) are always interesting, and the outcome is always in doubt - even which characters are the good guys or the bad guys。 Joe is a flawed lead character - always going beyond his job duties as a game warden - acting more like a policeman。 And his relationships with “management”, the sheriff, and the governor are always a challenge。 A couple of years ago, I was given the opportunity to read and review the latest book in the Joe Pickett series which led me to go back to the beginning。 A couple of thoughts on the series - I have enjoyed all that I have read; these are good books to listen to as well as read; and it is probably best, although not totally necessary, to read in order。 My thanks to G。P。 Putnam’s Sons and Edelweiss for the ARC of this novel。 。。。more

A big thank you to Head of Zeus and NetGalley for providing me with this ARC for my honest review。  This book comes out on Feb。 28th so mark your calendars😊What can I say? I love C。J。 Box's books, he's one of my favorite authors and is an autobuy for me。  I've been reading the series from the beginning, and Joe Pickett and Nate Romanowski are definitely 2 of my favorite book characters。  I enjoyed reading this one as much as all the others😊  Storm Watch is the 23rd book in the series but can be A big thank you to Head of Zeus and NetGalley for providing me with this ARC for my honest review。  This book comes out on Feb。 28th so mark your calendars😊What can I say? Thank you to the publisher, author and Net Galley for providing me with this advance copy of this fantastic book。Every year, I look forward to the next chapter of the Joe Pickett saga as the story telling is always top notch。 Truly it is like a favorite blanket in the comfort it provides。 There was a little bit of a detour in this one as for the first time it seems an international element becomes the antagonist of the story。 I liked that some modern problems have now infiltrated Wyoming。 Also, Thank you to the publisher, author and Net Galley for providing me with this advance copy of this fantastic book。Every year, I look forward to the next chapter of the Joe Pickett saga as the story telling is always top notch。 Truly it is like a favorite blanket in the comfort it provides。 There was a little bit of a detour in this one as for the first time it seems an international element becomes the antagonist of the story。 I liked that some modern problems have now infiltrated Wyoming。 Also, the Pickett's oldest child is now part of Nate Romanowski's operation so I am expecting to see her more in upcoming stories。 I wonder how the Pickett's other children will become involved。 Perhaps these portend the direction this series will move onto in the future。 Regardless, as always, I truly enjoyed this book and am giving it 5-stars。 。。。more

A welcome addition to an engaging series, yet it can easily be read as a standalone。 Our protagonist, once again, has difficulty following orders/protocol, but his ways of dealing with his new case are much more interesting。 I received an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher and voluntarily provided an honest review。

Another good Box novel featuring Wyoming Game Warden Joe Pickett。 After hunting for an injured elk in the start of a raging snowstorm and finding the body of a university professor murdered in a hidden, out of sight computer warehouse, Joe is thrust into the middle of another anti government faction, plotting an event in his corner of the Wyoming wilds。 When local officials do not seem interested in pursuing the professor's killer, or the circumstances of his death, Joe takes it on。 With the he Another good Box novel featuring Wyoming Game Warden Joe Pickett。 After hunting for an injured elk in the start of a raging snowstorm and finding the body of a university professor murdered in a hidden, out of sight computer warehouse, Joe is thrust into the middle of another anti government faction, plotting an event in his corner of the Wyoming wilds。 When local officials do not seem interested in pursuing the professor's killer, or the circumstances of his death, Joe takes it on。 With the help of his friend and falconer, Nate Rymanowski Joe sets out to find the killer and unwind the trail to what is being plotted。Very wild west type characters, as is usual for this Box series, and each is sharp and easily recognizable as central to the plot。Waiting now for the next adventure。 。。。more
